A is for aardvark

These two sleepy aardvarks are part of The Zoological Society of London‘s fantastic Children’s Exhibit.

For over 20 years I’d been going to East Africa and had yet to begin ticking off the animal alphabet. Like London buses it seems you have to wait for a long time for some to turn up and then two come along at once.

We would never have seen them if it hadn’t of been for the eagle eyes of ‘Tash’ Breed, our field assistant. At first we were confused, hares? kangaroos? Obviously not, but we couldn’t quite believe our luck; two aardvarks interacting – as far as we know this is the first time this behaviour has ever been documented. They were included in ‘African Cats’ as part of a beautiful dawn sequence.
