We got to film these superb, tenacious wee crustaceans for the weather episode of @silverback_films & @bbcearth #perfectplanet for @edcharles5 @huwcordey with the blooming lovely @amyjthompson @ryanatkinsoncam & Braydon Maloney

All episodes streaming now on @bbciplayer @discoveryplus & tonight, Sunday 17th @bbcone 8pm

(NB. No crabs were harmed during the making of this sequence - although we did get quite fit raking scores of them off the road to avoid running them over!)

Crabs are beautiful, curious & had no interest in Crabs are beautiful, curious & had no interest in eating us, even 4kg sleep disrupting robber crabs. Gabbing with @edcharles5 Naga & Charlie on @bbcbreakfast this am about the Christmas Island crab sequence in the #weather episode of @bbcearth & @silverback_films #perfectplanet on @bbcone 2000 this Sunday

Naga gave me credit for the footage when actually it was as ever a fantastic team of @ryanatkinsoncam on drone, timelapse & slider, @amyjthompson on lights & editorial not to mention everything in between & then their were the megalops or baby crablets 🦀 filmed by Braydon Maloney, who also assisted Ryan.

The saying “a bird in the hand is worth” thing The saying “a bird in the hand is worth” thing doesn’t actually work if you’re a wildlife filmmaker...we’d much rather they were in a bush.

This, not so wee, white-tailed Tropicbird ( aka Golden Bosun) fledgling was sitting in the middle of the road on our way home from filming 🦀‘s on Christmas Island. We gave him a lift to the bird sanctuary where he could hang out with all the other, not great at flying, fledglings until they were ready to soar.

Tropicbirds are stunning acrobats & so it was surprising how often we’d see these chicks on the road.
Red crabs know where they want to go & nothing, no Red crabs know where they want to go & nothing, not even a grubby pair of trainers, put them off. I have to admit to being totally taken in by their cross wee puckered up faces as well as their tenacity 🦀#perfectplanet Episode 3 #weather streaming now on @bbcearth @discoveryplus or @bbcone Sunday next 8pm

Glorious Gibbons Gibbons use a dramatic form of l Glorious Gibbons

Gibbons use a dramatic form of locomotion known as brachiation, which propels them through the canopy at blistering speeds of up to 53 km/h (35 mph) – very difficult to film. To attempt this seemingly impossible task, the team carefully studied the gibbons’ travel corridors and points of interest such as fig trees.

Gibbons make a mental map of all fig trees in their territory so know when one will be coming into fruit. This reconnaissance allowed cameraman @tomwalkercam to run like a mad thing through the jungle with a multiplicity of camera systems to let us feel as we are flying with the gibbons through the canopy. Working alongside him was camerawoman Sophie Darlington @sophie_d_wildlife who filmed from high tree platforms rigged by climbing extraordinaire & card wizard @waldo_etherington.

The stunning results can be seen this Sunday, the 10th of January at 8:00pm on BBC One in the second episode of #APerfectPlanet ‘The Sun’. Also streaming on @BBCiPlayer.

Many thanks to Dr Bach Hai and the Endangered Asian Species Trust whose critical research & conservation work are fighting to save Vietnams last wild spaces ensuring these gibbons have a home for the future.
